There is something reassuring about a Spider-Man comic that remembers the importance of the neighbourhood.
For Peter Parker, the balancing act was rent, work and relationships. For Miles Morales, it’s school, family, friendships and the inconvenient business of being a superhero. The extraordinary feels more involving when ordinary life still matters.
That is the appeal of Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1. Written by Bryan Edward Hill, with artwork by Nico Leon and Valentine De Landro, this new series brings Miles back to Brooklyn and puts his personal world at the centre of the action. It is a change of emphasis that makes an inviting pitch to returning readers and newcomers alike.
Story
Miles wants to concentrate on the people around him: protecting Brooklyn, keeping up with homework and perhaps making a connection with his new classmate, Valentina. The classic black-and-red costume is back, too. Instantly recognisable and beautifully suited to an acrobatic hero, it feels right for a story reconnecting with his roots.
Of course, a simpler life is easier to plan than to live. A new enemy, Revenant, brings a grudge tied to Jefferson Morales’ S.H.I.E.L.D. past. Miles is not simply facing another powerful opponent. He is discovering that his father’s history may put the whole family in danger.
That gives the premise its hook. Family has always helped distinguish Miles from Peter Parker; making those relationships central gives this fresh number one more to offer than a change of costume.
Miles Morales since 2011
Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, Miles first appeared in Ultimate Fallout #4, published on 3 August 2011. Fifteen years later, he has become a major figure in Marvel’s comics and a star of the animated Spider-Verse films.
What made him compelling was never simply inheriting a famous name. His family, cultural identity and perspective on responsibility gave him his own voice. A return to local stories offers room for those qualities to develop, without needing another universe to be in peril.
Sometimes the most interesting direction for Spider-Man is simply back home.
Artwork and creative team
Nico Leon draws Miles’ present-day adventures, while Valentine De Landro handles the flashbacks to Jefferson’s history. The contrast gives the family mystery its own visual identity alongside the energy of Spider-Man in motion.
Bryan Valenza’s colours help distinguish those worlds, with lettering by VC’s Cory Petit. Simone Di Meo provides the main cover. It is a creative team with plenty of scope to make the personal scenes matter as much as the action.
