Why a Comic Moon Membership Is One of the Best-Value Ways to Build a Collection
Comic Moon memberships
We’ve been giving quite a bit of thought to comic subscriptions lately, particularly what makes somebody want to sign up for one in the first place. The traditional comic subscription is a fairly straightforward affair. You choose your titles, somebody orders them for you, and eventually they turn up at your door. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, and we’ll continue to offer individual comic subscriptions, but we wanted to do something a little different with our new Comic Moon memberships. Something that combines the convenience of having comics delivered regularly with the enjoyment of discovering publications you might never have thought to buy yourself.
One of the things we’ve always enjoyed about comics is the element of surprise. Walking into a newsagent, browsing a second-hand bookshop or opening a box of old comics often leads you towards something entirely unexpected. It’s easy to become rather set in our ways as readers, particularly when we’ve been following the same characters or publishers for years. There’s nothing wrong with knowing what you like, of course, but sometimes the most enjoyable comic is one you knew absolutely nothing about five minutes before picking it up. We wanted our memberships to recreate a little of that experience, while still giving readers the opportunity to follow their favourite publishers and discover exciting new releases.
Membership options
We’re developing four main membership options, beginning with our Basic Membership at £5.99 per month. This is intended as an inexpensive introduction to the wider world of comics, with an emphasis on interesting independent publications, vintage comics and unusual discoveries from our collection. Not everybody wants to follow the latest superhero crossover involving seventeen different titles and a reading order that resembles a railway timetable. Some readers simply enjoy picking up something interesting and giving it a go, and that’s precisely the audience we have in mind.
Our Plus Membership, at £10.99 per month, takes a slightly different approach, concentrating more on exciting new releases, major launches and first issues from familiar publishers. We’re particularly keen on the humble number one issue, because it represents an opportunity to begin something new without needing an encyclopaedic knowledge of what happened to a character in 1987. We want these subscriptions to feature comics worth getting excited about, with carefully selected titles that give readers something to look forward to each month. Rather than simply issuing store credit and leaving customers to do all the work themselves, we’d much rather put some thought into choosing what’s worth reading.
The 72 Trough Club
Club update, 26 October 2026: Pay a £5 one-off joining fee today to reserve your numbered Trough, then £19.99 on the next 1st and monthly thereafter. The joining fee is additional to the monthly price. Your £25 comic selection and paid member savings start after the first successful £19.99 monthly payment; your first parcel dispatches on the last working day of that paid month. Each paid month now includes £25 of eligible comics at normal retail prices: 20% off is applied first, then the £20 comic allowance covers the discounted prices. Eligible additional My Trough purchases also receive 20% off, with standard UK monthly delivery included. We top up your monthly Trough with complimentary comics, gifts and physical previews, selected by our team according to availability and space in your parcel. The mix varies each month; there is no fixed number of free items. Explore the 72 Trough Club and its conditions →
Then there’s the one we’re particularly fond of, The 72 Trough Club, at £19.99 per month plus a £5 one-off joining fee.
There are 72 troughs, each with its own numbered compartment, and we’ve decided to turn them into the centrepiece of a new membership club. Yes, we’ve genuinely invested in dozens of pigeonholes for comic books. Whether this represents sound commercial judgement or the beginnings of a very elaborate farming metaphor remains to be seen.

The idea is that each member has their own numbered Trough at Comic Moon HQ, with membership limited to just 72 places. Every month, we’ll be building a selection of comics around new releases, first issues and interesting discoveries, while giving members opportunities to add requested titles, vintage comics and other purchases from our catalogue. We also want the Troughs to contain occasional surprises, including promotional material, gifts and other little extras. Part of the appeal is knowing that your collection is being looked after and that there’s always the possibility of finding something unexpected waiting for you.
It’s a slightly different way of approaching comic collecting, and one we hope will develop into a proper little community. The limited membership isn’t intended as some great marketing trick to manufacture exclusivity. We simply have 72 physical compartments, and unless somebody invents a way of making the building considerably wider, that’s how many we’re working with.
Member benefits
We also want being a Comic Moon member to mean something beyond receiving a parcel every month. Our planned membership benefits include 15% off eligible purchases on the Comic Moon website, opportunities to combine eligible additional orders with membership deliveries without further postage charges, and complimentary entry into eligible member prize draws under their published rules. We’re also exploring ways of giving members earlier access to selected stock, previews of forthcoming publications and occasional promotional material.
Importantly, we’d like these benefits to encourage readers to explore the website rather than simply buying the same handful of titles every month. We have an enormous amount of vintage stock still being catalogued, growing relationships with independent British publishers and plans to introduce comics from further afield. If our memberships encourage somebody who normally reads nothing but Marvel to discover an obscure British adventure comic, or introduce a lifelong 2000 AD reader to an interesting new independent publication, we’d consider that a rather pleasing result.
Memberships for younger readers
Alongside these memberships, we’re introducing the Comic Moon Kids Club at £12.99 per month, which has a slightly different purpose. Each delivery will contain three or four new or recent comics selected with younger readers in mind, together with a free surprise gift, with all comics bagged and boarded and UK postage included. We want to introduce children to familiar characters, new adventures and the enjoyment of building their own little collections.
More importantly, we hope parents might occasionally sit down and read these comics with their children. Reading together can do wonders for children’s confidence, vocabulary and imagination, and it gives families an opportunity to spend some time together without everybody staring at a different screen. We’re firmly of the belief that for the price of a takeaway coffee, you can buy a child a comic or book that might become a treasured childhood memory. Very few coffees achieve quite the same distinction.

Monthly comic selections
Ultimately, we don’t want Comic Moon’s memberships to become another monthly expense that people forget they’re paying. We want them to be enjoyable, affordable and sufficiently varied that members genuinely look forward to receiving their next selection. We’re also keen to keep developing them based on what customers actually enjoy, rather than assuming we’ve got everything right from the outset. That’s particularly important for a small independent business, where listening to customers ought to be one of our advantages.
There’s a wider ambition behind all of this, too. We’ve spoken before about our desire to encourage reading, support independent publishers and help bring British comics to a larger audience. A successful membership programme could help us do all three, giving smaller publishers a regular opportunity to reach new readers while allowing Comic Moon to introduce publications that might otherwise struggle for attention alongside the major American titles.
We’re still putting the finishing touches to the membership arrangements, and individual comic subscriptions are also being prepared, so we’ll be announcing further details as everything becomes available. There are plenty of other developments underway at Comic Moon, including new publishing relationships, a growing selection of British comics and some rather ambitious plans for 2027.
For now, we hope you’ll have a look around the new website, explore what we’re building and perhaps consider joining us when the memberships open.
After all, a good comic subscription should offer more than a regular delivery of paper. It should give you something to read, something to discover and occasionally something to become rather unnecessarily excited about.
Welcome to Comic Moon.
Comics worth harvesting.
