WOW Comix Presents #2 – Manchester Superheroes, Dinosaurs and Independent British Comics!

Forget Gotham City and Metropolis. Manchester has its own superheroes. Oh, and there’s a dinosaur loose on Deansgate!

Who says the best superhero adventures have to come from America? From the canals of Manchester to the streets of Deansgate, WOW Comix Presents brings comic-book action a little closer to home, complete with larger-than-life heroes, prehistoric monsters and a healthy helping of Northern humour.

Published in Summer 2026, the second issue of WOW Comix Presents continues the adventures of Mancunian, Manchester’s very own superhero, in a colourful celebration of independent British comic-book storytelling.

Produced by Manchester-based WOW Publishing Ltd, the comic brings together action, humour and a distinctly local flavour, with familiar Greater Manchester locations providing the backdrop for some decidedly unusual superhero antics.

The Manchester setting

The headline adventure, ‘Mancunian and Impact: Dino on Deansgate’, is written by Brian M. Clarke with artwork by John Jackson.

When scientist Henry Doyle’s experiments with ancient dinosaur DNA and contemporary lizard genes go spectacularly wrong, Manchester finds itself facing an unexpected prehistoric visitor. It’s up to Mancunian and his fellow superhero Impact to tackle the resulting chaos.

There’s something particularly enjoyable about seeing superhero adventures unfold against recognisable British streets and landmarks. Rather than another confrontation in Gotham or Metropolis, we’re treated to comic-book mayhem in Manchester, complete with canals, familiar architecture and a healthy dose of local humour.

The issue also features ‘Captain Terrific’, a short humorous strip by John Jackson, which provides a light-hearted conclusion to the comic’s main adventure.

British comic creators

Beyond its superhero stories, WOW Comix Presents offers something equally worthwhile: a platform for independent comic creators.

The editorial makes clear that WOW Publishing hopes to feature more local writers and artists in future editions, actively encouraging aspiring creators to submit their work.

It’s a welcome reminder of the importance of Britain’s independent comics scene. While the major American publishers dominate much of today’s market, smaller British publications continue to provide opportunities for original characters, regional storytelling and emerging creative talent. The issue features a cover by veteran British comic artist Mike Collins, with production design by Ken Wilson, original WOW Comix logos by Marc Jackson and editorial duties handled by John Webster.

Independent British comics

There’s an appealing sense of enthusiasm running throughout WOW Comix Presents. It’s an independently produced, full-colour publication that embraces traditional superhero storytelling while giving it a distinctly British identity.

From its Manchester setting to its mixture of adventure and humour, the comic demonstrates that original British superheroes still have plenty of stories to tell.

At Comic Moon, we’re particularly keen to champion publications like this. The future of British comics doesn’t rest solely with established characters or major publishers. It also depends on independent creators, small presses and readers willing to discover something new.

We’re giving away copies of WOW Comix Presents #2 completely FREE through the Comic Moon website! Packed with original British comic-book action, colourful characters and a dinosaur causing havoc on Deansgate, it’s a fantastic opportunity to support independent British comics without spending a penny on the comic itself. WOW Comix Presents #2 is a welcome addition to that tradition, proving that you don’t need to travel to New York to find a superhero adventure. Sometimes, Deansgate will do just fine.
