Shaolin Cowboy:
Staying A.I.Live
Beautifully drawn. Utterly unhinged.
Geof Darrow returns with Shaolin Cowboy: Staying A.I.Live—a collision of kung fu, savage satire and the kind of artwork you can lose yourself in.

There are few artists in comics quite like Geof Darrow, and even fewer capable of making complete and utter chaos look so beautiful.
One of our featured comics at Comic Moon is Shaolin Cowboy: Staying A.I.Live, the latest instalment of Darrow’s wonderfully bizarre creation from Dark Horse Comics. If your shelves could use something a little less predictable, this is a very good place to look.
For anyone unfamiliar with the series, Shaolin Cowboy follows a largely silent, wandering kung fu master through a grotesque, frequently hilarious and spectacularly violent American landscape. It’s part spaghetti western, part martial arts epic and part fever dream, with a healthy disregard for conventional storytelling.
Geof Darrow’s artwork
Darrow has long been a personal favourite of mine. His work with Frank Miller on Hard Boiled and The Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot is extraordinary. His conceptual designs for The Matrix also show how far his imagination has travelled beyond the printed page.
What I love most is the obsessive detail. Every panel feels like a world in itself: tiny visual jokes, elaborate machinery, strange faces and background business that you might not notice until your third or fourth look. The action may be outrageous, but your eye keeps finding another reason to stop.
There’s something wonderfully excessive about an artist who seems determined to draw absolutely everything, whether the reader notices it or not.
That’s why a physical copy makes such a satisfying addition to a collection. You can pause, go back and look again. With Darrow, the background is often half the pleasure.
Story and creative team
The new story begins with an apparently simple good deed: a message in a bottle sets the Cowboy on a mission of mercy. Naturally, the world has other ideas. Hostile townsfolk and manufactured misinformation turn a quiet journey into another very bad day.
Across the miniseries, Emil Cola and an army of A.I.-powered robotic assassins enter the picture. It’s a suitably ridiculous collision of corporate menace, technology and martial arts—giving Darrow room to unleash the mechanical monstrosities and warped humour that make this series so distinctive.
Artificial intelligence may dominate the conversation, but this is no sober lecture about the future. Expect a fiercely drawn, deliberately abrasive satire of the present, with absurdity turned up until the dial comes off.
The creative team: written and illustrated by Geof Darrow, coloured by Ian Herring and lettered by Nate Piekos. Issue #1 is a 32-page comic, first published on 1 July 2026. The four-part series is currently scheduled to conclude with #4 on 4 November 2026; release dates can change.

Tom Smithyman praises Darrow’s illustrations and the mix of political satire and outrageous humour, while noting that the opening chapter is light on plot.

David Brooke calls the issue “gloriously, defiantly strange”, highlighting the intricate artwork and inventive action. His caveat: the leisurely plot and gross-out jokes won’t suit everyone.
David Brooke · 30 June 2026Read the review ↗A note before you dive in: this is a comic with graphic violence, crude humour and pointed political satire. The publisher lists it as T+; it isn’t a children’s comic. The beautiful drawing comes with plenty of bite.
